Mouthguards for sport – children
Reasons your child should wear a mouthguard
A mouthguard is a rubber plate which is moulded to fit precisely over your child’s teeth and gums. It helps to cushion their mouth and protect it from damage. It is important that your child wears a mouthguard whenever they are taking part in a sport or activity which involves physical contact or the risk of being hit by fast moving objects, for example football, rugby, hockey and cricket, to name just a few.
Getting a mouthguard made for your child
Everyone’s mouth is a different shape, and it is important that your child wears a mouthguard which has been properly fitted to the size and shape of their teeth and gums. There are cheap home mouthguard kits available, but these do not fit accurately to the teeth and can fall out or even cause choking. Worst of all, they are thinnest in the areas which need most protection, making them all but useless.
It is much safer to get a mouthguard custom-made for your child by your dentist. We can create a mouthguard which will fit precisely to their teeth and gums, giving full protection to your child’s mouth, jaw, neck, and brain.
Replacing your child’s mouthguard
Because children’s teeth are still growing, their mouthguards should be replaced regularly to ensure they fit their teeth and gums properly. Poorly-fitting mouthguards can come loose and will not offer full protection to your child’s mouth and jaw. Make sure your child visits us regularly so that they always wear a properly-fitting mouthguard when involved in a sport or physical activity.
