Mouthguards for sport

Reasons for wearing a mouthguard

A mouthguard is a rubber plate which is moulded to fit precisely over your teeth and gums. It helps to cushion your mouth and protect it from damage. It is important to wear a mouthguard when involved in a sport or activity which involves physical contact or the risk of being hit by fast moving objects, for example boxing, rugby, hockey and cricket, to name just a few. In fact, it is often compulsory to wear a mouthguard while taking part in certain sports.

Getting a mouthguard made

Everyone’s mouth is a different shape, and it is important that you wear a mouthguard which has been properly fitted to the size and shape of your teeth and gums. There are cheap home mouthguard kits available, but these do not fit accurately to your teeth and can fall out or even cause choking. Worst of all, they are thinnest in the areas which need most protection, making them all but useless.

Rugby scrumIt is much safer to get a mouthguard custom-made by your dentist. We can create a mouthguard which will fit precisely to your teeth and gums, giving full protection to your mouth, jaw, neck, and brain. We can even provide mouthguards in the colours of your team or sports strip!

The lifespan of a mouthguard

Like all sporting equipment, mouthguards suffer from wear and tear and should be replaced at regular intervals. Bring your mouthguard with you whenever you visit us, and your dentist can check it and advise when a replacement is necessary.
